estimate EUR 8.000
¶ The most important book of the history of the 18th c. European garden, exemplifying the "garden-mania" of the 'Ancien régime', which was so influenced by English and Chinese styles. George-Louis Le Rouge (1707-90) was a famous cartographer, engraver and architect. He was born in Hanover, the son of the French architect Louis Rémy de la Fosse. From 1736 he lived in Paris, where he obtained a position as military and civil engineer of King Louis XV and Louis XVI. Le Rouge began to publish 'Jardins Anglo-Chinois' in 1775 and continued the project over a period of fourteen years. Included are plans, views and details, often adapted from earlier printed sources, and occasionally from original drawings, of Stowe, Kew, Blair Atholl, Buckingham, Richmond, Chiswick, Esher, Claremont, Windsor, and Wilton, Roissy, Saint-James at Neuilly, Marly, the Trianon, Desert de Retz, numerous other locations in and around Paris, Schwetzingen, Wurzburg, Steinfurt and Orianenbaum. Of the greatest historical importance are the quite detailed plans of a number of gardens that have either disappeared completely or been altered to a point where the original intentions of the garden designer are no longer evident (such as the garden at Raincy which now only exists on paper). On a more exotic note, and typifying the vogue for chinoiserie, the 99 plates of the gardens and palaces of the Qianlong Emperor of China (in cahiers 14 to 17) are particularly valuable, and evidently much more carefully executed than the versions published by Chambers. All of the plates were engraved after Chinese woodblock illustrations or paintings. - See Royet (V.), Georges-Louis Le Rouge, les Jardins anglo-chinois, Inventaire du fonds français. Graveurs du XVIIIe siècle, t. XV, I-483; Kat. Orn. Berl. 3312 (only 19 cahiers). 1: 25 engr. plates & 3 engr. text-pp. Numb. 1-28; 2: 23 engr. plates; 3: 28 engr. plates; 4: 29 (of 30) engr. plates. As often vol. 5 'Traité des edifices…' by Chambers is lacking (it was published separately), as well as vol. 21 (not mentioned in index vol. 12), and 'Description du douzieme cahier' (8 pp.).

¶ Four very rare works on master swindler Abraham Maggaris (c. 1721-1803), who used several identities to extract money from his fellow citizens. ¶ Edwards VII, 219ff: "In 1762 the condemnation of Émile by the Paris Parlement forced him to flee from France and settle in Neuchâtel under the protection of the king of Prussia. (…) the work is not just a manual of education, but, as Rousseau himself points out, a philosophical treatise on the goodness of human nature. It is less concerned with laying down the practical details of a specific pedagogic method than with describing the fundamental principles which underlie the whole of man's development from infancy to maturity. Rousseau's ultimate object is to teach the art of living, for man's first duty, he says, is to be human."

¶ Second state of this extremely rare work, printed in the same year as the first, with separately engraved captions in French underneath the engraved plates. Our copy has 3 extra lvs. at the end with the text of Gohory in Latin (the latin ed. appeared the same year: Historia Jasonis de Colchica). Léonard Thiry's illustrations of the story of Jason and Medea, engraved by René Boyvin, constitute one of the most important suites from the School of Fontainebleau. Many of Thiry's preliminary drawings are preserved at the 'Prentenkabinet' at Leiden University, and from them we can see how Boyviun not only reversed them, but enriched them with depth and their dynamic outer frames. - Mortimer, French 16th c. ¶ Johannes van Zyl, introduced to us as 'millmaker of Lexmond' on the title-page, describes the typical Dutch craft of millmaking in clear admiration for the mathematical precision that is essential in his profession. As plate 49 is aptly named it is the 'beschrijving en vertoning van een zeer fraay en speculatif werkje'. He found an equally skilled and precise engraver in Jan Schenk. The plates show both the technical, the mathemical and the architectural detailing. Bierens de Haan, 5482 (this (2nd) edition). - Sold w.a.f., not subject to return.
