Marshall-Admiral Marquis Togo Heihachiro (1848-1934) was a gensui (or admiral) of the fleet in the Imperial Japanese Navy and one of Japan's greatest naval heroes. He was termed by Western journalists as "the Nelson of the East", after Horatio Nelson, the British admiral who defeated the French and Spanish at Trafalgar. Born into a samurai family, Togo enrolled in the Japanese navy at the age of 16; he subsequently studied naval science in England for seven years, during which time he circumnagivated the world, returning to Japan in 1878. Serving again in the Imperial Japanese Navy, he rose to fame through skill and daring, eventually earning honors never bestowed on anyone outside of the Imperial family. It is interesting that he kept his journals in English.
