¶ The Viscount Santarem (1791-1856) - who coined the term of 'cartography' and who gave historical cartography a sound scientific basis - published three atlases in which he reproduced medieval European maps and portolans: one dated 1841, another in 1842 which in reality was delayed until 1844; and yet another dated 1849, including charts up to 1855 together with some from previous atlases. This facsimile edition of the third and last edition of 1849, published by the 'Administraçao do Porto de Lisboa' to commemorate the discoveries by the Portuguese, has been made with great care and with a preface in Portuguese, French and English. Printed in a limited, numbered edition.
