Catalogue accompanying the auction of the library of the well-known Swiss philologist and Leiden professor Daniel Wyttenbach (1746-1820), which was held from Monday 11 March until Wednesday 20 March 1822. Wyttenbach was librarian at the University Library of Leiden from 1798-1816 and Professor of Greek and Latin, General History, etc. from 1799-1817. In total 3390 books and manuscripts were held for auction, some 450 theology and law books, some 1300 philosophy and history books, and some 1535 philology and classical books. Our copy belonged to mr. E. Luzac according to a written presentation on half-title. Prices added in manuscript.

Strong impressions and fine etchings (2nd state (of 3)) with engraved captions underneath in Dutch and French of the harbours of Rotterdam, Delft, Amsterdam, Enkhuizen, Hoorn, Texel, Dordrecht, Middelburg, Brouwershaven, etc. Each view also being embellished with it's own engraved coat of arms in the centre of the lower blank margin of the plate representing the city depicted. Below the title is the address 'Te Amsterdam by P. Yver, J. Smit en Zoon, en F.W. Greebe'. Although the book was published in 1802, the drawings by Dirk de Jong were already made around 1780/81. The famous Venetian reedition of the Hammer of Witches, the best-known source for 16th-c. views on sorcery and witches, describing in three sections the evidences of witchcraft as established by the Bible, its nature and horrors and the manner of dealing with it, and the practical rules for procedure whether the trial can be conducted in an ecclesiatical or a secular court.
