Pontanus' work far exceeds the limits of the usual town-books, because it incorporates the history of the voyages of exploration and maritime trade undertaken by the enterprising citizens of Amsterdam. Of special importance are the accounts of Dutch explorations in the East-Indies, including the accounts of the two first voyages to the East Indies. Containing also the famous report of Willem Barentsz' voyages to the Arctic region in search of a North-East passage to Asia (1594-97), derived from De Veer's Diarium nauticum as well as from Van Linschoten's Diarium. - Nijhoff/v.
