ARABIC MANUSCRIPTS -- AL-TAMKRŪTĪ (d. 1003/1593-4), Al-Nafha al-miskiyya fî al-sifâra al-turkiyya. Account of an early diplomatic mission from Morocco to Istanbul, 1589-1591. The text of the travelogue figures on fols. 4b-36a of the manuscript. It is preceded by quotations from lost parts of al-Fishtâlîs (d. 1612) Sa'did chronicle, Manâhil al-safâ and followed on fols. 37a-48b by various literary extracts. It is followed by an appendix (fols. 37a-47b) containing an extract of additional notes by the author with stories and literary anecdotes etcetera he heard from people he met during this journey. The scribe and epitomist, whose name is, as explained in the colophon on fol. 47b, Yahyâ ibn Muhammad ibn Ibrâhîm ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn 'Alî al-Jaznâ'î nasaban (by genealogy) al-Dar'î dâran (by residence; living in Ouadi Dra, like the author had done), completed his work on 20 Shawwâl 1053(1644). Mod. hcf. binding. (Some wormholes, with loss of tiny parts of text). EUR 3.500 EUR 3.300 ¶ This manuscript allows for many corrections of the text translated by De Castries, En-Nafhat al-Miskiya fi-s-sifarat et-tourkiya. Relation d'une ambassade marocaine en Turquie 1589-1591 par Abou-l Hasan Ali ben Mohammed et-Tamgrouti. Traduite et annotée par ---. Paris: Paul Geuthner, 1929. (The Arabic original was published separately, in facsimile, without place and year, 189 pp. A copy of that edition is in the Leiden University Library, Nr. 8120 A1). The Arabic manuscript of which De Castries published a modern transcript, contains the same abbreviated text as the present manuscript, though of an inferior quality and without the condensed additional materials of fols. 37a-47b. MS dated 29 Safar 1129 (1717). Al-Mannûnî, Masâdir, vol. 1, Nr. 301, refers to the manuscript used by De Castries, but knows no second manuscript of this text.
