ARABIC MANUSCRIPTS -- AL-GHAZZĀLĪ (d. 1111), Ihyâ' 'ulum al-dîn. A fragment of 88 large lvs. in splendid Andalusian calligraphy of the Almohad era (12th or early 13th century). ¶ Containing approximately one quarter of the whole work (mainly from the second quarter or "rub'"). The script as well as the colours used for the headings of chapters and paragraphs, as also as for rubrics, show close relationship to a manuscript of Ibn Tûmart's Kitâb, dated 579/1183, preserved in the National Library of France, in Paris (Ar. 1451). A page from that manuscript was reproduced by F. Deroche (and others), Manuel de codicologie des manuscrits en écriture arabe, Paris 2000, p. 130. Al-Ghazzalî's Ihyâ' was banned and burnt during the Almoravid era (first half of the 6th/12th century), but rehabilitated and honoured by the Almohad dynasty. This manuscript is a rare witness of the renewed prestige Al-Ghazzâlî's work had acquired in Al-Andalus and the Maghrib in Almohad times. Documents concerning the banning and destruiction of Al-Ghazzâlî's Ihyâ''ulûm al-dîn in Al-Andalus and North Africa are included in the book by Al-Maghrâwî, Al-Asbâb al-haqîqiyya li-harq ihyâ' 'ulûm al-dîn min qibali Amîr al-Mu'minîn Ibn Tâshufîn. Marrâkush, 2004.

The manuscript was decorated in a sublime manner in the year 1419 Hijra (1998) by the contemporary Moroccan calligrapher 'Abd al-Karîm al-Wazzânî al-Hasanî from whose workshop in Rabat it was acquired. He also designed its fine Moroccan leather binding with flap. It was 64 fols. At the end there are some additional prayer-texts.

¶ The author died in Granada, in the month of Sha'bân of the year 897 (29 May 1492 - 26 June 1492), shortly after the Christian conquest of the city. On the author's life see Ahmad Bâbâ, Nayl al-ibtihâj, nr. 691. Though the manuscript is undated, in the eulogy used in the title of the book (fol. 1b) it is implied that the author was still alife at the time of the copying of the manuscript: "May God preserve His blessing and continue his well-being" ("Abqâ Allâhu barakatahu wa-adâma 'âfiyatahu"). In addition, also the manuscript's watermark suggests a dating near the end of the 15th century. This watermark consists of a "Hand with Glove", No. 1299 in G. Piccard, Wasserzeichen Hand + Handschuh, Stuttgart 1997. The specimen adduced by Piccard is in a document from Neuenburg, dated 1499 A.D. The data available concerning the year and place of death of the author imply that the manuscript must be dated around the year 1490 A.D. and attributed to Granada, shortly before its fall into the hands of the Catholic Kings, or to nearby Morocco, where many refugees from Granada had settled in the late 15th century. This extensive commentary on Al-Khalil's (d. 767/1365) compendium of Malikite law was printed in the margin of Al-Khattâb's (d. 953/1546) commentary Mawâhib al-Jalîl fi Sharh Mukhtasar al-Shaykh Khalil (Cairo, 1328 H).

The text of the travelogue figures on fols. 4b-36a of the manuscript. It is preceded by quotations from lost parts of al-Fishtâlîs (d. 1612) Sa'did chronicle, Manâhil al-safâ and followed on fols. 37a-48b by various literary extracts. It is followed by an appendix (fols. 37a-47b) containing an extract of additional notes by the author with stories and literary anecdotes etcetera he heard from people he met during this journey. The scribe and epitomist, whose name is, as explained in the colophon on fol. 47b, Yahyâ ibn Muhammad ibn Ibrâhîm ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn 'Alî al-Jaznâ'î nasaban (by genealogy) al-Dar'î dâran (by residence; living in Ouadi Dra, like the author had done), completed his work on 20 Shawwâl 1053(1644). ¶ This manuscript allows for many corrections of the text translated by De Castries, En-Nafhat al-Miskiya fi-s-sifarat et-tourkiya. Relation d'une ambassade marocaine en Turquie 1589-1591 par Abou-l Hasan Ali ben Mohammed et-Tamgrouti. Traduite et annotée par ---. Paris: Paul Geuthner, 1929. (The Arabic original was published separately, in facsimile, without place and year, 189 pp. A copy of that edition is in the Leiden University Library, Nr. 8120 A1). The Arabic manuscript of which De Castries published a modern transcript, contains the same abbreviated text as the present manuscript, though of an inferior quality and without the condensed additional materials of fols. 37a-47b. MS dated 29 Safar 1129 (1717). Al-Mannûnî, Masâdir, vol. 1, Nr. 301, refers to the manuscript used by De Castries, but knows no second manuscript of this text.

ARABIC MANUSCRIPTS -- MUHAMMAD al-Saghîr Al-Ifrânî (d. ca. 1743), Nuzhat al-hâdî fî akhbâr al-qarn al-hâdî. Chronicle focusing on the Sa'did Sultans of Morocco in the 16th and 17th century. Manuscript of 178 fols. On European paper with watermark "J. Whatman, 1834". The colophon has no date, but the first page has the following annotation in the handwriting of the scribe of the manuscript: "Al-Hamdu li-'llâhi; mallakahu Allâhu li-kâtibihi 'ubayd rabbihi ta['âlâ], Muhammad ibn Idrîs bi-al-intisâkh fî sanat 1253 (inta)h(â)": "Praise be to God; granted by God as a [lawful] property to its writer, the humble servant of his Exalted Lord, Muhammad ibn Idrîs, through the act of copying, in the year 1253 (=1837). End of note." The scribe can be identitified with Muhammad ibn Idrîs al-'Amrâwî al-Fâsî, copyist, scribe, secretary, poet, and finally minister and prime minister in the service of Sultan Moulay 'Abd al-Rahmân. He died in 1264/1847. Bound in its original brown leather bind. with flap, decorated with guilt frames and red lacquer medaillons. The acidity of the dark ink of the outer frames of the text affected some of the manuscript's paper leaves, but without any loss or dam. of the text. Written in a neat, but elegant and clear script, with a sophisticated lay-out, using different colours and larger types of script for rubrics (names of authors and titles of books quoted, etc.).

¶ This work deals with the 16th century history of the Sa'did dynasty in Morocco in its first 53 sections (circa two thirds of the book), up till and including the reign of Sultan Al-Mansûr al-Dhahabî who is the main protagonist of this part of the work and died in 1012/1603. In the second part, comprising 22 sections, the author deals with the period between death of Al-Mansûr and the ascension of the shurafâ' (descendants of Muhamad) from Sijilmâssa who founded the Alawite dynasty. These sections deal among others with the role of the Dilâ'iyya lodge and its leader Al-'Ayyâshî in this period of transition. In the third and last part, the author deals in 6 sections with the early history of the Alawite dynasty, ending with the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismâ'îl who assumed power in 1081/1671, and whom the author puts on one line with the great Sultan al-Mansûr al-Dhahabî. This paralel between both rulers is so important, that the work can be seen as a kind of preparatory and introductory study for a biography of Sultan Ismâ'îl. The author completed his work in 1139/1726. Literature: EI (2nd edition), s.v. Al-Ifrânî. The work has enjoyed continuous attention and recognition as one of the major sources of Moroccan history during the Sa'did dynasty, both from Moroccan and European scholars. In addition to the 24 manuscripts mentioned by 'Abd al-Latîf al-Shâdhilî in his printed edition of the work (Casablanca, 1998/1419), there exist an undated lithographic edition from Fes, as well as a printed edition together with a French translation by Houdas (1888-9). Of the edition and translation by Houdas, an undated offset reprint was published by Maktabat al-Talib in Rabat (Morocco). See also Brockelmann, GAL II 457, and GAL S II 681-682, and Lévi-Provencal, Les historiens des chorfa, 120ff.

¶ The text of volume 1 corresponds to the edition of Beyrouth 1980, vol. 1, pp. 191-355; the text of volume 2 contains large sections of volume 7 of the same Beyrouth edition. As is usually the case in this type of literature, the manuscripts show considerable textual differences, both in the prose-texts and in the poetry, with the printed edition. The type of script resembles MS BN Paris 4745, as reproduced by Claudia Ott, Metamorphosen des Epos Sîrat al-Mugâhidîn (Sîrat al-Amîra Dhât al-Himma) zwischen Mündlichkeit und Schriftlichkeit (Leiden: CNWS, 2003), Plate XXXII (dated 1275/1859). I would lay them back on your little oriental reading table and smoke a pipe with it, look at it and think: I am 'Uthmân ibn Fûdî! Was-Salâm. GvVloten".

Amsterdam 26-8-1779), piëtistisch dichteres, schrijfster van godsdienstige brieven. (...) (...) (www.inghist.nl). - Dit manuscript is niet genoemd in Buijnsters.

¶ Beautifully written and lavishly illustrated manuscript on trigonometry with calligraphic headings. The author opens with general definitions of different types of projections (pp. 1-4), and proceeds with discussing three types, orthographic (pp. 5-23), stereographic (pp. 24-73), and gnomonical (pp. 74-179). Each section starts with propositions followed by several trigonometrical problems. There are numerous accurately drawn diagrams to illustrate the text. They are mostly small, but some are full-page. In some diagrams the author used coloured inks to highlight particular sections and/or lines. Three diagrams on the folding leaf have pasted parts that can be unfolded to create three-dimensional figures. The handwriting is clear and the manuscript's attraction is heightened by the calligraphy of the headings that have been written in different alphabets, see for instance the heading Spherical Trigonometry on p. 74, written with roman capitals, a fraktura and embellished with a bird. Some headings are written in black ink whereas brown ink has been used throughout in the text. The note on the inside front cover reads "Frederic Robinson, December 19th 1797." This information is repeated on p. 1, "Dec. 19 1797 FR.P., and the completion date is written at the end of the text on p. 179 "Oct.r 12th 1798," likewise repeated on the reverse. We were unable to find any information on Robinson. A pencil note on the inside of the back cover states that he was an English professor for mathematics, who lived from 1746 till 1825.

- Cf. Koeman, Geschied. v.d. kartografie v. Nederland, p. 153 e.v.
